Rkomi, real name Mirko Manuele Martorana, was born in the energetic city of Milan on April 19, 1994. He has become a prominent figure in the Italian rap industry. Raised in the well-known Calvairate neighborhood in the Milan suburbs’ east, Rkomi’s rise from an unusual background to the forefront of the music business is truly amazing.
Early Life
Unlike most future rap icons, Rkomi’s early life did not follow the conventional path. From attending the CFP Galdus Hospitality Institute to performing odd jobs like bartending, bricklaying, and dishwashing, he traversed life as a Calvairate student. The act of discontinuing his education at the age of seventeen was the start of an extraordinary voyage that eventually propelled him to the top of the Italian music industry.
Rkomi met fellow rapper Tedua around this time, who would go on to become not just a buddy but also a major inspiration in his professional career. It was Tedua who accidentally sparked Rkomi’s interest in music, as she had originally wanted to be a tour leader.
Career
In 2012, Rkomi made his musical debut with joint ventures such as “Keep Calm Mixtape” featuring Sfazo and “Quanto che non fa tu” featuring Falco. Still, the Calvairate Mixtape from 2014 was the one that made him famous. The mixtape, which was created in association with well-known figures like Tedua and Izi, demonstrated Rkomi’s undeveloped potential and set the stage for his future fame.
Rkomi came back on YouTube with the song “Dasein Sollen,” following a short break. The rapper’s depth of thought is evident in the title alone, which is derived from the Heideggerian notion of Dasein. His career took a significant turn after this, and the EP “Dasein Sollen” was released in 2016.
“Dasein Sollen” was well received, which gave Rkomi further opportunities. His live performance in Turin alongside Calcutta cemented his place in the Italian music scene. His signing a contract with the Rock Music label, run by Shablo and Marracash, was a major turning point in his career.
Rkomi collaborated with Marracash, Noyz Narcos, and Alberto Paone on his debut studio album, “Io in terra,” which was published in 2017. “Io in terra” reached the top of the FIMI chart and was certified gold thanks to the album’s hit songs, “Solo,” “Apnea,” and “Maipiรน,” which received a great deal of praise.
Rkomi and rapper Ernia collaborated on the tune “Hot water and lemon,” which was part of the EP “Ossigeno,” which was released in 2018. The gold certifications for “Tickling” and “Hot Water and Lemon” signaled the end of another prosperous era.
As Rkomi made references to the album “Where eyes do not arrive,” which was released in March 2020, the excitement grew in 2019. With collaborations from Jovanotti, Elisa, Carl Brave, Sfera Ebbasta, Dardust, and Ghali, among others, the album followed in the footsteps of its predecessor’s popularity by becoming the highest-rated album when it was released.
In February 2022, Rkomi joined forces with Elisa on the song “Cosa manca,” showcasing his ability to seamlessly collaborate with diverse artists.
