Rosi Mittermaier was a German alpine ski racer. Rosi Mittermaier was born on August 5 , 1950, in Munich but died on January 4 , 2023, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. She was the daughter of the businessman Heinrich Mittermaier (1911–2009) and the cook Rosa Mittermaier.
It must be noted that Rosi Mittermaier was born as a twin but she lost her twin sister at birth. Heinrich Mittermaier and Rosa Mittermaier used to operate an inn on the Winklmoos-Alm and later a student hostel. She was Roman Catholic. Heinrich Mittermaier was also a state-certified ski instructor and had his own ski school.
He was the brain behind the ski careers of his daughters Heidi, Rosi and Evi Mittermaier. With respect to education, Rosi Mittermaier attended primary and secondary school; she spent the first three years living with a local foster family. Rosi Mittermaier completed training as a hotel manager but never worked in that profession. Rosi Mittermaier was involved in the Alpine Ski World Cup, for 9 years and won many awards.
Some of the awards to the credit of Rosi Mittermaier include 1974: Bravo Otto in silver, 1976: Bravo Otto in gold, 1976: Germany’s Female Athlete of the Year, 1976: Skieur d’Or, 1976: Honorary Lion from Radio Luxembourg, 1977: Bambi in the category “Most exciting sports scene”, 1981: Golden Camera in the readers’ choice for the best female athlete (awarded in 1982), 1999: Olympic Order, 2000: Georg von Opel Prize in the “Athletes in Social Responsibility” category, 2007: Bavarian Order of Merit, 2008: Bavarian State Medal for services to the environment and health, 2009: Bavarian Sports Prize, 2013: Bavarian State Medal for Social Merit, 2014: Medal for special services to Bavaria in a United Europe and 2018: Bavarian Sports Award of the Century
After the career of Rosi Mittermaier, she was quite popular and served in the media as an advertiser, sports ambassador and non-fiction author together with her husband Christian Neureuther. She is said to be the first winter athlete to be inducted into the German Sports Hall of Fame, which she co-founded.
Rosi Mittermaier got married to the ski racer Christian Neureuther on June 7, 1980. They had two children; the fashion designer Ameli Neureuther and Felix Neureuther, who also won several World Cup medals as a ski racer.
Rosi Mittermaier died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in January 2023 at the age of 72 after a serious illness. She was buried in the cemetery in the Garmisch district around six months after her death.
