Mahershala Ali is an American actor whose extraordinary skill has won him multiple important accolades and international praise. He was born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore on February 16, 1974. He has received critical praise and established himself as one of the most significant and respected performers of his time.

Early Life and Education

Maher-shalal-hash-baz, Ali’s unique name, was inspired by the second child of the prophet Isaiah, as told in the Book of Isaiah. Ali was born in Oakland, California. He was raised in a Christian home in Hayward, California, by his father, Broadway performer Phillip Gilmore, and mother, Willicia Goines, an ordained Baptist pastor.

Ali began his acting career after earning his MFA from New York University. His involvement in TV shows including “Crossing Jordan” (2001–02) and “Threat Matrix” (2003–04) helped him first come to notice. But a pivotal moment in his career came when he played Richard Tyler in the science fiction series “The 4400” (2004–07).

In 2008, Ali made his screen debut in the fantasy film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” directed by David Fincher. He went on to become more well-known for his supporting work in the last two Hunger Games movies and the critically acclaimed political drama series “House of Cards,” for which he received his first Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

For Ali, his roles in “Moonlight” (2016) and “Green Book” (2018) represented the apex of his professional life. His depiction of a sympathetic heroin dealer in “Moonlight” won him the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, making him the first Muslim actor to hold that title. After winning an additional Academy Award for his performance as Don Shirley in “Green Book,” Ali became the first Black actor to win two Oscars in the same category and the second to win multiple acting Oscars.

In addition to his Academy Awards, Ali’s excellence extends to the small screen. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program for executive producing “We Are the Dream: The Kids of the Oakland MLK Oratorical Fest” (2020).

The Hulu comedy-drama series “Ramy” (2020) and the HBO crime series “True Detective” (2019) both featured Ali’s multifaceted skills, which led to nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards for both shows. Along with acting as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes in the Netflix series “Luke Cage” (2016), he has also provided the voice of Aaron Davis in the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and its follow-up “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023) videos.
