Early Life and Education

Abbots Langley, an English community close to Watford in Hertfordshire, is where Elizabeth Louise Kendall was born. She had her early schooling at Watford Grammar School for Girls, where she was a classmate of notable alumna Geri Halliwell. She continued her studies after finishing high school at the esteemed University of Cambridge. She majored in history at Queen’s College in Cambridge, where she achieved academic success and graduated with first-class honours.

Career

In 1992, Kendall joined the Labour Party, which marked the beginning of her political career. She started working with the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) after finishing her studies at Cambridge, where she concentrated on early childhood development and learning.

She began working as a political advisor to Harriet Harman in 1996. Harman was a prominent member of the Labour Party who subsequently served as a minister in Tony Blair’s administration after Labour won the 1997 general election. Elizabeth Kendall, who was Harman’s government special adviser at the Department of Social Security, continued to collaborate closely with her.

Elizabeth Kendall’s political career underwent a significant change in 2010 when she was chosen to represent Leicester West as a Member of Parliament (MP). Kendall gained a majority of 4,017 votes despite a 7.6% vote shift against Labour. On June 10, 2010, she delivered her first speech in front of the Commons during a discussion about reducing poverty in the UK.

During her first few months in office, Elizabeth Kendall temporarily served on the Education Select Committee from July 2010 to October 2010. In the 2010 Labour Party leadership vote, when Ed Miliband eventually won, she backed David Miliband.

As the shadow junior health minister under John Healey, Kendall joined the Opposition frontbench in October 2010 under Ed Miliband’s direction.

Elizabeth Kendall left the Shadow Cabinet when Jeremy Corbyn won the Labour Party’s leadership election in September 2015. As Owen Smith won the 2016 Labour Party leadership election, she continued to be loyal in her commitment to her party.

Kendall returned to the frontbenches as the Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in September 2023, under Keir Starmer’s direction.
