Kurt Karl-Heinrich Ahrens, also called Kurt Ahrens Jr., was born on April 19, 1940, in Braunschweig, Germany. He comes from a racing family; his father, Kurt Ahrens Sr., was a German speedway champion who raced against him for five years.
Ahrens Jr. began his racing career in 1958 in a Cooper-Norton Formula 3 car and went on to win the German Formula Junior title in 1961 and 1963, which coincided with his father’s retirement.
Ahrens Jr. then moved on to Formula 2 racing and competed in German Grand Prix races, frequently driving Brabhams for the Caltex Racing team. He was present at the Hockenheimring in 1968, when Jim Clark tragically died.
Ahrens Jr. was allowed to drive the Brabham-Repco F1 car in the rainy 1968 German Grand Prix. In 1968, Ahrens Jr. joined the Porsche factory sports car squad and won the 1969 Austrian 1000 km event with Jo Siffert.
He also co-drove the pole-winning Porsche 917 “Long Tail” in the 1969 and 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, however, neither vehicle finished the race. In 1970, Ahrens Jr. and Vic Elford won the 1000km Nürburgring in a Porsche 908.
Following the 1970 season, Ahrens Jr. retired from racing.
One remarkable accomplishment of his career was never being involved in a race crash, however, he did experience a high-speed incident during testing in April 1970 that caused his car to disassemble.
After that encounter, Ahrens Jr. opted to hang up his helmet, concluding his career on a positive and safe note.
