Biography
Konstanze Dahn was born on June 12, 1814, in Kassel. Constanze Dahn was born into a musical and artistic family. Growing up in the lively cultural milieu of Jérôme Bonaparte’s Westphalian court in Kassel, she was first trained as an artist by her musically gifted family.
At the tender age of seven, Dahn made her theatrical debut in 1821 at the theater in Düsseldorf, captivating audiences with her performance as the “Donauweibchen.” Notably, her talent caught the attention of renowned artist Wilhelm von Schadow, who immortalized her in a painting as a mignon, reflecting her early artistic promise.
Dahn’s journey as an actress took her to the Hamburg City Theater and later to the esteemed Thalia Theater. It was at the Thalia Theater that she achieved her breakthrough moment on June 29, 1831, with her captivating portrayal of “Gretchen.” Opposite the actor Heinrich Marr, Dahn’s performance mesmerized audiences across the German-speaking world, propelling her to fame virtually overnight.
Dahn’s successful guest engagement at Munich’s Royal Court Theater in June 1833 was the start of her long-lasting relationship with the establishment. Up to the end of her career, she delighted audiences with her performances and became a beloved member of the group.
On October 1, 1865, Dahn had her formal farewell performance, playing Goethe’s “Egmont” as the “Duchess of Parma.” She retired from the stage and lived a private life until dying in Munich on March 26, 1894, when she was almost eighty years old.
