Conrad Francis Dobler was a tenacious and contentious guard in the National Football League (NFL) who made a lasting impression with his combative style of play and controversial on-field antics. Playing with the St. Louis Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, and Buffalo Bills over the course of 10 seasons, Dobler established himself as one of the league’s most formidable and infamous players.

Biography

Conrad Francis Dobler was born on October 1, 1950. He became a formidable presence on the offensive line after being selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth round of the 1972 NFL Draft. Alongside respected colleagues like Dan Dierdorf, Dobler helped the Cardinals become a dominant pass-blocking unit and was selected to three straight Pro Bowls between 1975 and 1977.

Dobler was known for using dubious methods to outwit opponents, earning him the nickname “Pro Football’s Dirtiest Player.” He freely acknowledged that he had given his squad the upper hand by employing intimidation techniques, such as pounding defensive linemen in sensitive spots to hinder their attempts. Dobler accepted his role as a formidable enforcer in the trenches and refused to apologize in the face of criticism and censure from teammates and the media.

His NFL career ended with the Buffalo Bills in 1978 when he was moved to the New Orleans Saints, where he played with a belligerent attitude for two seasons. Dobler’s reputation persisted even after he retired following the 1981 season, making a lasting impression on the history of the league.

Dobler’s life took unexpected turns away from the field. Physical issues from his playing days plagued him in his post-football years, necessitating many operations to treat injuries he had acquired. Even though Dobler had serious health issues, his struggles went beyond his physical condition.

Dobler’s wife Joy was severely injured in a horrific accident in 2001, leaving her immobile and causing a severe financial burden for the family. Due to the widespread media coverage of the Dobler family’s predicament, billionaire Phil Mickelson decided to intervene and provide funding to support Holli and Stephen’s schooling. The gesture brought attention to the difficulties encountered by a large number of retired NFL players and emphasized the need for more resources and help for those dealing with the fallout from their careers.

In 2018, Conrad Dobler’s contributions to the sport were recognized as he was enshrined in the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame. Dobler died on February 13, 2023, at the age of 72.
