Drawing the Map of Ghana: A Step-by-Step Guide

You don’t have to be a professional artist to draw the map of Ghana. With the right materials and a little patience, anyone can create a beautiful and accurate representation of this West African nation.

To get started, you will need a blank sheet of A3 or A4 paper, a pencil, crayons or colored pencils, a ruler, an eraser, and any other supplies you may need.


Before you begin, you will need to know the 16 regions of Ghana. If you are drawing the old map, which only includes the 10 regions, you will need to know those as well. The 16 regions are:

  1. Upper West
  2. Upper East
  3. North East
  4. Northern
  5. Savannah
  6. Oti
  7. Bono East
  8. Bono
  9. Ahafo
  10. Ashanti
  11. Eastern
  12. Volta
  13. Greater Accra
  14. Central
  15. Western
  16. Western North

Steps to Draw the Ghana Map

  1. Start by drawing the outline of Ghana, region by region. Begin with the upper part of the country, starting with the Upper West and moving down to the Greater Accra Region.
  2. Once you have drawn the outlines of all the regions, draw the major cities and rivers.
  3. Add more details, such as smaller cities, major towns, mountains, and other important landmarks.
  4. Use your colored pencils or crayons to add color to the map.
  5. Label the map with important details such as the names of the regions, cities, and major landmarks.
  6. Shade the map with appropriate colors to highlight the different regions and their features.
  7. Finally, add a key at the bottom of the map. A map key is essential to help readers understand the different symbols and colors used on the map.


By following these simple steps, you can create a beautiful and accurate map of Ghana by hand or using computer software. With a little practice, you can improve your map-making skills and create maps of other countries and regions as well.
