Respected German author and politician, Heide Simonis died on July 12, 2023 at the age of 80 at her home in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Who Was Heide Simonis? 

Heide Simonis was a respected German politician and author born on July 4, 1943 in Bonn, Germany. She was a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) since 1969 and went on serve as the Minister-president of Schleswig-Holstein from 1993 to 2005.

In doing so, she became the first female prime minster in the history of German politics. But long before that, she had to educate herself for the future she envisaged.

After she graduated from high school in 1962 in Nürnberg, she went on to study economics and sociology in the University. She attended the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Kiel University and eventually graduated in 1967.

Two years after she graduated from the University, Simonis actively began her political career by joining the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Since then, she served the party in different capacities till she reached the pinnacle of her political career by becoming a Prime Minister.

She contested and won the elections to represent the people of Rendsburg-Eckernförde in parliament in 1976. She was a member of the Bundestag from October 3, 1976 to June 8, 1988.

Simonis then became the Minister of Finance of Schleswig-Holstein from May 5, 1988 to March 19, 1993. During that period, she served briefly as Deputy Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein.

She then became the first female to become a minister-president in the history of German politics after she was elected into office on May 19, 1993. She managed to retain the seat and served as Prime Minister until April 27, 2005.

Simonis later involved herself with UNICEF where she served as chairwoman of the German Committee from 2005 to 2008 where she resigned because of a scandal that had to do with donations.

The former Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at her residence on Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. For a woman of her stature, it is very understandable why people are interested in knowing about her cause of death.

Simonis has been suffering from Parkinson disease for some time now until it eventually killed her on July 12, 2023.

However, even in death, her legacy still lives on for the kind of life she lived while on earth. She holds the record of being the first woman in the history of Germany to serve as Head of a State government and also the only woman to attain such height in the 20th century.
