Hans Heyer is a German racing driver best known for his touring car career and remarkable performance at the 1977 German Grand Prix.
Heyer was born on March 16, 1943, in Mönchengladbach, Germany, and had an early interest in motor racing and engineering. At the age of 16, he began racing in the Netherlands, where he won multiple karting championships.
Heyer struggled to secure a racing license in Germany in the 1960s, but he was able to compete in the Formula K class and achieve outstanding results.
He also competed in France and won the Brignoles 24-Hour Classic twice. In the 1970s, Heyer became involved with Zakspeed, racing their Group 2 Ford Escorts in the European Touring Car Championship and the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft.
He earned success by winning several titles. Heyer’s most memorable moment in Formula One came at the 1977 German Grand Prix.
Despite having minimal expertise with single-seaters and driving a subpar car, he attempted to compete in the race after two reserve drivers dropped out.
However, he was disqualified because his gearbox failed. Heyer became the only driver to receive a DNQ, DNF, and DSQ in the same race as a result of this occurrence, therefore excluding him from competing in any future Formula One races.
Heyer continued his racing career in the 1980s, winning the DRM championship for Lancia in 1980 and winning famous races like the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Spa 24 Hours. He retired in 1989, having completed 999 races in 30 years.
Heyer returned in the 2000s to compete in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup, his 1000th race. He also saw his son, Kenneth Heyer, become a racing driver after him. Kenneth is presently competing in the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup.
