Who Was Hans Clarin?
Hans Clarin, born Hans-Joachim Schmid on 14 September 1929 in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, was a well-known German actor and voice artist.
He rose to prominence for his remarkable voice acting abilities in children’s audio plays, particularly as the kobold Pumuckl, the German voice of Asterix, and the ghost Hui Buh.
Clarin’s interest in performing began at a young age, and after finishing his education, he pursued it by studying acting in Munich from 1948 to 1950. He refined his skills and prepared himself for a successful career in the entertainment sector throughout this time.
Clarin had his stage debut in Franz Grillparzer’s play “Weh dem, der lügt” (“Woe to him who lies”) in 1950. This was the start of his great acting career.
He was a member of the Bavarian State Theatre in Munich from 1952 to 1967. He enthralled audiences with his performances in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Leonce and Lena,” “Woyzeck,” and “The Blue Angel.” Clarin’s versatility as a character actor shined through as he excelled in humorous, dramatic, musical, and opera parts.
Clarin entered the film industry at the same time. In 1952, he made his feature film debut as the titular character in “Zwerg Nase,” a film based on Wilhelm Hauff’s fairy tale.
He appeared in over 100 television and feature films during his career, leaving an unmistakable influence on the German film industry. “The Haunted Castle” (1960), “The Indian Scarf” (1963), and “Pippi Longstocking” (1969) are among his major works.
Clarin’s television career flourished as well, making him a familiar figure on German television. He rose to prominence in a number of series, including “Weißblaue Geschichten” (1985), “Fest im Sattel” (1988), “Rivalen der Rennbahn” (1989), “Peter und Paul” (1992), and “Titus, der Satansbraten” (1997).
He also appeared as a guest star in several long-running crime series, including “Ein Fall für zwei,” “Der Alte,” and “Tatort.” Clarin appeared in five Chiemgauer Volkstheater plays between 1995 and 2000.
Clarin made important contributions as a voice artist in addition to his extraordinary acting career. He expertly dubbed the voice of “Kookie” Kookson in the American television series “77 Sunset Strip.”
He also played the title character in the popular children’s audio series “Hui Buh,” as well as the naughty kobold Pumuckl.
