Günter Overfeld’s Biography
The eminent German diplomat Günter Leo Overfeld was born in Xanten on September 7, 1955. He has a remarkable career spanning several decades and has held several ambassadorial positions, demonstrating his extraordinary diplomatic abilities.
After high school, Overfeld started his academic career by studying philosophy and history from 1974 until 1980. His passing the first state examination at the end of his education opened the door to a career in diplomacy. He enlisted in the Foreign Service in 1981 and passed the career test in 1983 to advance to the higher rank of Foreign Service.
Overfeld has held prominent positions in several nations over his career. His diplomatic career started in the Iranian Embassy and the General Consulate in Toronto. He served in Iran from 1986 to 1987 before being posted to Turkey in 1990.
Overfeld’s career flourished as he played a variety of roles. In 1990, he started working for the Foreign Office as a consultant. From 1993 to 1996, he was the deputy head of the department.
He then showed his dedication to international relations by taking up the position of consul general in Ho Chi Minh City from 1996 to 2000.
In 2000, Overfeld was elevated to a permanent position and appointed ambassador to Pakistan. As chief of department at the Foreign Office from 2003 to 2007, he made more contributions. He was chosen to lead the Permanent Mission to UNESCO in Paris from 2007 to 2009 due to his competence.
One of the highlights of Overfeld’s extraordinary career was his work with the East-West Institute (EWI). He headed the EWI’s Brussels Office from 2009 to 2012 in addition to serving as Vice President and Director for Regional Security.
After replacing Karl Flittner, Overfeld served as Germany’s ambassador to Mali from 2012 to 2015.
He was appointed ambassador to Uzbekistan in 2017 and remained there until the middle of 2021. After that, he assumed the position of acting charge d’affaires at the embassy in Madagascar until 2023, when he was appointed German ambassador to Chad.
He has made a major and long-lasting contribution to the diplomatic scene through his different posts.
