Gino Iorgulescu Biography

George “Gino” Iorgulescu, born on 15 May 1956 in Giurgiu, Romania, is a retired professional footballer and the current chairman of the Romanian Professional Football League. He played as a defender during his career.

At a young age, Iorgulescu started playing football at the junior varsity level for his neighbourhood team, Dunărea. He made his senior team debut during the 1973–74 Divizia B campaign.

Later, he and Calianu, another member of the Dunărea team, were transferred to Sportul Studențesc București. Iorgulescu made his Divizia A debut on August 31, 1975, in a 1-1 tie with Universitatea Craiova, under the direction of coach Angelo Niculescu.

He only made one appearance in his debut campaign, but Mircea Rădulescu utilised him more regularly with the young team.

Gino was loaned to Progresul București, a different Divizia A team, for the following season, where he made 28 appearances and scored 6 goals. He then went back to Sportul Studențesc, where he played for the next 12 seasons.

Iorgulescu played 354 times for the team throughout the course of his career while tallying 55 goals in the Divizia A.

He also had productive runs in the Cupa României, where he played 25 games and scored four goals, and the UEFA Cup, where he played 14 games and scored twice.

He was given permission to play abroad towards the end of his career and made two appearances for Beerschot VAC in the 1989–1990 Belgian First Division.

Iorgulescu played 48 games for Romania at the international level, scoring twice. He made his debut against Switzerland on November 11, 1981, in a 0-0 tie that served as a World Cup qualifying match for 1982.

He was instrumental in the team’s victorious Euro 1984 qualifying campaigns, which included a 1-0 win over World Cup-hosting Italy. Romania failed to make it through the group round of the final Euro 1984 competition.

Iorgulescu participated in the 1986 World Cup qualifying matches as well, where he scored a goal against Turkey and led the team as captain for the first time against Egypt in a friendly.

On October 8, 1986, he made his final national team appearance against Israel in a friendly.

Iorgulescu was given the Ordinul “Meritul Sportiv” – The Medal “The Sportive Merit” class III by President Traian Băsescu on March 25, 2008, in appreciation for his contributions to Romanian football.

Iorgulescu served as a national team assistant coach for Romania under Mircea Rădulescu and later Cornel Dinu after ending his playing career. Then, from 1994 to 2005, he served as president of Național București.

Under his direction, the club finished second in the Divizia A championship three times and advanced to the Cupa României finals in 1997 and 2003.

Iorgulescu won a number of awards throughout his career, including the Balkans Cup with Sportul Studenţesc București in the 1979–1980 campaign. He also finished second with the team in the Divizia A and Cupa României.
