Franz Beckenbauer’s Biography
Franz Anton Beckenbauer was born on September 11, 1945, in Munich, Germany. He was the second son of Franz Beckenbauer Sr. and Antonie Hupfauf. Beckenbauer was raised in Giesing, a working-class neighbourhood of postwar Munich.
Beckenbauer began playing football at the age of nine, with the SC Munich ’06 young team in 1954. He admired Fritz Walter, the 1954 FIFA World Cup winner, and backed the local team, 1860 Munich.
However, he joined Bayern Munich’s youth team in 1959 following a contentious competition that concluded in a physical altercation with an 1860 Munich player.
Beckenbauer made his Bayern Munich senior squad debut in 1964. During his time at the club, Bayern Munich won multiple titles, including the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1967 and three consecutive European Cups from 1974 to 1976.
Beckenbauer was named team captain and is widely regarded for perfecting the sweeper (libero) position, becoming one of the best exponents of the aggressive sweeper game.
Beckenbauer represented West Germany and competed in three FIFA World Cups and two European Championships. He is one of three guys who have won the World Cup as both a player and a manager. Beckenbauer won the World Cup as captain in 1974 and again as a manager in 1990.
Beckenbauer’s services to football were extensively acknowledged and celebrated throughout his career. He was selected European Footballer of the Year twice and has appeared on numerous dream teams and all-time greatest player lists.
