Dorothee Bär is a German politician from the Christian Social Union (CSU) in Bavaria. Dorothee was born on 19 April 1978 in Ebelsbach, a town in the Haßberge district of Bavaria.
She attended high school for a year in 1996 in Grayslake, Illinois, USA, and then graduated in 1999 from the Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium in Bamberg.
With funding from the Hanns Seidel Foundation, she attended several German institutions to study political science. She graduated in 2005 from the Free University of Berlin’s Otto-Suhr-Institut. Before going into politics full-time, she was a journalist for several newspapers and radio stations.
In 1994, Bär became a member of the CSU, but in 1996 she joined the Young Union (JU), the CSU’s youth arm. She advanced swiftly through the ranks, assuming the position of Chairperson of the Association of Christian Democratic Students (RCDS) in Bavaria from 2001 to 2003 and joining the JU Board of Directors in Lower Franconia by 1999.
The electoral district of Bad Kissingen, which comprises the counties of Bad Kissingen, Rhön-Grabfeld, and Haßberge, is represented by Dorothee Bär, who was elected to the Bundestag in 2002. She was the deputy spokesman for foreign policy in her parliamentary group and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee from 2005 to 2009 during her early tenure in the Bundestag.
She has been one of the deputy heads of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group since 2021, where she has been in charge of family and cultural policy under the direction of Friedrich Merz and Ralph Brinkhaus.
As co-chair of the working group on digital policy following the 2013 federal elections, Bär was key in coalition discussions. Under Chancellor Merkel’s next government, she was named Parliamentary State Secretary in Alexander Dobrindt’s Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. She worked on growing Germany’s digital and logistical infrastructure while serving as the government’s Coordinator for Freight Transport and Logistics.
Noting her position as a key player in digital policy, CDU chairman Armin Laschet appointed Bär as the only CSU member in his eight-person shadow cabinet ahead of the 2021 federal elections. Despite the CDU/CSU’s eventual defeat in the election, her involvement highlighted her strategic significance for the party’s future course.
