Biography
Nancy Faeser is a prominent German lawyer and politician from the Social Democratic Party (SPD). She was born on 13 July 1970 in Schwalbach am Taunus, a suburb of Frankfurt.
She studied law at Goethe University Frankfurt from 1990 to 2000, finishing some of her coursework at the New College of California. In 2000, Faeser passed her second state bar exam and obtained her license as an attorney.
She started her legal career at Clifford Chance in Frankfurt, first as a research assistant and then as a practicing attorney from 2000 to 2007, focusing on corporate and regulatory matters.
In 1988, Faeser joined the SPD. She immediately assumed important legislative responsibilities after being elected to the Hessian State Parliament (Landtag) for the first time in 2003.
Faeser was appointed the SPD’s Landtag spokesman for internal matters in 2009. Under Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, she was also a member of the SPD’s shadow cabinet during the 2013 state election. In 2019, she was elected parliamentary group leader while concurrently holding the role of opposition leader.
Faeser ran in the Main-Taunus I district and was the SPD’s leading candidate in the 2023 Hessian state election. Even with her well-known position, the SPD saw unprecedented defeats, receiving only 15% of the statewide vote. Despite finishing third in her district, Faeser managed to hold onto her seat by running on the party list. She made the move to federal politics in March 2025 when she was elected to the Bundestag for Hesse.
In December 2021, Faeser became the first woman in German history to serve as Federal Minister of the Interior and Community. She had previously contributed to the working group on migration and integration when negotiating a coalition for the so-called “traffic light” alliance (SPD, Greens, and FDP).
In July 2024, Faeser imposed a ban on the right-wing magazine Compact, citing its opposition to Germany’s constitutional order. Critics, including editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsässer, decried the action as a blow to press freedom.
