Carla Reemtsma, born on April 3, 1998, in Berlin, is a prominent German climate activist and a key organizer of the “Fridays for Future” (F4F) school strikes in Germany, inspired by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. She serves as a spokesperson for the movement, representing it nationwide and in the media.
Early Life and Education
Carla Reemtsma grew up in the Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf and attended the Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium in Berlin-Nikolassee. During her school years, she actively engaged in student leadership roles, serving as both a class representative and student council member. Interestingly, she is a cousin of Luisa Neubauer, another prominent German climate activist, and has familial ties to the former owner of Reemtsma Cigarette Factories.
After completing her Abitur (German secondary school qualification), Reemtsma moved to Münster in 2016. There, she studied “Politics and Economics” as a scholarship recipient of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German Academic Scholarship Foundation) at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (University of Münster). She completed her bachelor’s degree in the fall of 2021 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in “Integrated Natural Resource Management” at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Additionally, Reemtsma serves on the board of directors of the Smart Energy for Europe Platform (SEFEP) gGmbH, the supporting organization for Agora Energiewende.
Passion for Activism and Environmental Concerns
Carla Reemtsma’s interest in politics and environmental activism began during her teenage years. Even before organizing F4F demonstrations in Münster, she had experience in climate activism. Her journey into activism was driven by a growing awareness of environmental issues.
Reemtsma is also a youth ambassador for the international organization ONE, which works to combat extreme poverty in Africa.
Public Advocacy
Since January 2019, Carla Reemtsma has been actively involved in organizing demonstrations and actions for the F4F movement in Germany. Her introduction to this role came after hearing Greta Thunberg’s speech at the UN Climate Conference in Katowice in 2018. Thanks to her articulate speaking abilities, she took on the responsibility of handling national press affairs for the movement.
Reemtsma has represented the F4F movement in various talk shows, including appearances on Maybrit Illner, “Hart aber fair,” and the Münchner Runde. She has been interviewed by news programs on ARD and ZDF, as well as several print media outlets.
In September 2019, Richard David Precht discussed climate revolution and the younger generation’s activism with her in his philosophy program. She has also engaged in discussions with political figures, such as Hamburg’s First Mayor Peter Tschentscher, regarding whether the global movement F4F strengthens German democracy.
