Hans-Hubert “Berti” Vogts is a German former professional footballer and manager who has had a successful career both on and off the field.
Vogts, who was born on December 30, 1946, spent his whole professional career as a defender for Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach. He was noted for his toughness and earned the moniker “Der Terrier” because of his battling attitude on the pitch.
During Vogts’ tenure at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1970s, the club enjoyed remarkable success. They won five Bundesliga titles, one German Cup, and two UEFA Cups.
Vogts also competed in the 1977 European Cup Final, but the team was defeated by Liverpool. He made 419 Bundesliga appearances with the club, scoring 32 goals, and 64 European competition appearances, scoring eight. Vogts withdrew from playing in 1979.
Vogts also enjoyed a great international career, representing West Germany. He played nine games for the West Germany boys’ team, three for the under 23s, and received 96 senior caps, making him one of Germany’s most capped players.
Vogts captained twenty of the senior games and scored one international goal. He was a member of the West German national squad that won the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
One of his most notable moments came in the finals, when he marked and defeated the legendary Johan Cruyff.
After retiring from football, Vogts went into coaching and management. He began as the coach of West Germany’s under-21 national team before becoming an assistant manager for the senior national team. In August 1990, he was named to manager of Germany, succeeding Franz Beckenbauer.
Vogts guided the team to second place at Euro 1992 and triumph at Euro 1996. However, the team failed to go beyond the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cups in 1994 and 1998. Vogts resigned as manager in September 1998.
Vogts later managed Bayer Leverkusen as well as the Kuwaiti, Scottish, Nigerian, and Azerbaijani national teams. He enjoyed varied degrees of success in these roles and encountered criticism and hurdles along the way.
Vogts also worked as a special advisor to the US national team during the 2014 World Cup.
