Biography
Luigi is an American man who has been named as a suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He was born on May 6, 1998, in Towson, Maryland, to Kathleen and Louis Mangione, a Baltimore-area couple of Italian descent.
Luigi attended the esteemed Gilman School, a private secondary school in Baltimore, Maryland, which is known for its demanding academic program and charges tuition of over $37,000 per year. After graduating as valedictorian in 2016, Mangione enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League university, where he earned two degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) in computer engineering and a Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) in computer and information science.
In addition to working as the project lead for a university video game development program and mentoring younger students as head counselor for Stanford University’s pre-collegiate studies program in 2019, Mangione showed a strong interest in technology and programming while attending Penn, where he worked as a UI programming intern at Firaxis Games from May 2016 to August 2017 and helped develop the video game Civilization VI.
On December 4, 2024, Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, an American health insurance corporation, was shot and killed in Midtown Manhattan.
However, Mangione was taken into custody by local authorities on December 9, 2024, at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. An employee called the police after a client saw that Mangione’s look matched photos of Thompson’s accused killer that the New York City Police Department (NYPD) had issued.
After searching Mangione, police claimed to have discovered a 3D-printed silencer and gun that resembled the ones used in the shooting. He was charged with eleven New York state offenses by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office on December 17, 2024.
