Career
In 2002, Baumann became a member of SC Freiburg’s youth program and rose through the ranks. He played in 21 more games for SC Freiburg’s B squad during his tenure with the team, in addition to his 104 Bundesliga outings.
On the last day of the 2009–10 Bundesliga season, Baumann earned his senior team debut in a 3–1 home win over Borussia Dortmund. He became Freiburg’s first-choice goalkeeper in the 2010–11 season, playing in 30 league games during his first year.
He signed a contract extension with Freiburg in June 2011 that ran until 2015. He played a total of 73 games over the following two seasons, 67 of which were in the Bundesliga.

He agreed to a four-year deal with TSG Hoffenheim on May 14, 2014. He established himself as a vital member of the team right away and was selected as their first-choice goalie. After Benjamin Hübner retired in 2022, Baumann was appointed captain of Hoffenheim.
Baumann demonstrated his ability to save shots during the 2023–24 Bundesliga season, leading the league in saves with 157.
He played for the U18, U19, U20, and U21 national teams while representing Germany at many youth levels. In 2007, he made his lone U18 appearance in a friendly loss against the Republic of Ireland, losing 3–2. He participated in four 2009 UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifiers for the U19 squad, with two clean sheets in the elite round, although Germany was unable to advance.

Baumann did not participate in the UEFA Nations League matches against Spain and Switzerland in September 2020, despite being called up to the senior team. Later, he was added to the team for the Germany-hosted UEFA Euro 2024, however he was benched.
Baumann ultimately made his senior debut for Germany on October 14, 2024, in a UEFA Nations League A match against the Netherlands at the Allianz Arena.
