German diplomat Joachim Christoph Schmillen was born in Prüm on December 6, 1962. Since 2023, he has served as the Federal Republic of Germany’s ambassador to Panama.
Schmillen studied psychology and education from 1984 to 1988 at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich as part of his officer training (1983–1988) in the Bundeswehr.
He declined to enlist in the military after completing his education. In the 12th electoral term (1990–1994), he worked for the Green MP Vera Lengsfeld. He worked for non-party MP Alfred Mechtersheimer starting in 1987.
Later, he served as Joschka Fischer, the leader of Alliance 90/The Greens’ parliamentary group,’s office manager. Schmillen took over as the minister’s office manager upon his appointment as Federal Foreign Minister in 1998.
Schmillen took over as director of the Foreign Office’s planning staff in 2000 after Georg Clemens Dick left to become Chile’s ambassador.
He took over Dick’s position as ambassador to Chile in 2003. Peter Scholz succeeded him there in 2006, and he was named ambassador to Nigeria in July of the same year, succeeding Dietmar Kreusel.
He served as Peru’s ambassador from 2011 to 2014. Schmillen served as ambassador to Jamaica from 2014 to 2018, and he was also accredited to the Bahamas.
Schmillen took a leave of absence following the conclusion of his ambassadorship in Jamaica, serving as Vice President of Global Affairs at the Caribbean Maritime University in Port Royal, Jamaica, from 2018 to 2023.
Since 2023, he has served as Panama’s ambassador.
