German historian, political scientist, and diplomat Vito Cecere was born in Bremen, Germany, on February 20, 1967. Cecere has a prominent academic and political career. She is currently the German Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Austria, having held this position since 2023.
Cecere was raised in Weyhe, Lower Saxony, and was impacted by both his mother’s German ancestry and his father’s Italian heritage. He pursued community work for two years following his graduation from KGS Weyhe in 1986, before starting his academic career.
Cecere attended the Università degli Studi di Bologna and the Leibniz University of Hanover from 1988 to 1996 to study political science and history. He graduated with a Magister Artium degree.
Working as a research assistant for the SPD parliamentary group in the Lower Saxony state parliament marked the beginning of Cecere’s professional career in the early 1990s.

He joined the International Office in 2014 as Commissioner for Information Technology, where he oversaw the internet editorial and international communications divisions.
Cecere has actively participated in several organisations and projects over his career. Among his many positions are chair of the German-American Fulbright Commission and member of the board of trustees of the Max Weber Foundation for study in the humanities and social sciences abroad.
Apart from his career, Cecere has been active in politics since his youth, most notably in the SPD and the Jusos. Along with being a member of Gesicht Zeigen!, he has also supported UNICEF Germany.
