She started her career in 1920 and rose to prominence in political cabaret, theater, and cinema. Leading actress Giehse performed at the Munich Kammerspiele from the late 1920s until 1933.

She fled Germany for Zürich, Switzerland, when the Nazis took control in 1933, where she carried on her acting career while living in exile.

In order to escape being taken prisoner by the Nazis, Giehse journeyed throughout central Europe beside Pfeffermühle. Afterwards, she wed English author John Hampson.

She played at theaters on both sides of the Iron Curtain after the Second World War, primarily in her home state of Bavaria. She portrayed Mother Courage in the play Mother Courage and Her Children by Bertolt Brecht while she was living in exile.

Following the war, she went back to Munich and the Munich Kammerspiele, where Brecht himself directed her to reprise the role of Mother Courage in 1950.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Giehse played numerous principal roles in various German theaters and was in high demand as an interpreter of Brecht’s works. She made appearances in more than 20 television shows and motion pictures.

In 1988, the Deutsches Theatermuseum in Munich hosted a commemorative exhibition and a commemorative stamp in her honor as part of the Women in German History series.
