Mathilde Cottrelly was a German-born stage actress, singer, producer, and theatre manager who gained popularity on Broadway from the 1880s to the 1920s.
Her father was an opera conductor, and she was born in Hamburg, Germany, on February 7, 1851. At a young age, Cottrelly started her career on stage, and by the time she was sixteen, she was married and performing in light opera productions.
Her husband died tragically in 1871, but she carried on performing and singing, finally travelling to America in 1875.
Before moving to New York to become a member of McCaull’s Comic Opera Company, Cottrelly made his stage debut in Germany. She never let her German accent get in the way of her performances, even though English is her second language.
Reviews of her debut Broadway appearance in 1882 included acclaim for her command of the English language from the New York Times and the New York Sun.
Cottrelly rose to prominence as McCaull’s go-to comedian and filled several positions in the group, such as stage director, costume designer, and bookkeeper.
In the 1880s, she excelled in musical comedy and was made a partner in the company. She became a character actor as she approached her forties in the 1890s, and she stayed that way for the remainder of her career. Cottrelly, who was well-known for her skill and adaptability, portrayed a variety of roles, frequently with distinct accents.
