Uwe Brandl was born on October 27, 1959, in Abensberg. In 1974, Brandl became involved in politics when he joined the Student Union, then the Young Union, and finally the CSU. Following his 1980 graduation from Kelheim’s Donau-Gymnasium, he set out to flourish both academically and professionally. After serving in the Bundeswehr, Brandl attended the University of Regensburg to study law, concentrating on business and administrative law. Between 1986 and 1989, he finished his Ph.D., and his legal clerkship, and worked as a research assistant at the University of Regensburg’s Chair of Public Law.
Brandl’s political career took off when he assumed the role of the first mayor of the city of Abensberg in 1993. The people of Abensberg trusted and respected him because of his vision and leadership, which helped the town reach new heights. Meanwhile, in 1996, Brandl committed himself even more to regional politics when he was elected to the Kelheim district district council.
Apart from his responsibilities as mayor, Brandl was a key figure in several local organizations. From 1998 to 2002, he was the Bavarian Association of Municipalities’ Second Vice President. In 2002, he was elected to the association’s leadership. With an overwhelming vote of confidence from his colleagues, he was re-elected as President of the Bavarian Association of Municipalities in 2008 for his outstanding governance.
Brandl’s national leadership positions allowed his influence to go well beyond Bavaria. He represented the interests of local communities all around the nation as President of the German Association of Towns and Municipalities from 2018 to 2020.
