Early Life and Education
Robert Habeck was born and raised in Heikendorf, Germany, the starting point of his adventure. He started his scholarly endeavors after finishing his secondary studies at the Heinrich Heine School in Heikendorf. He finished his alternative civilian service in 1991 before beginning his studies at Freiburg am Breisgau’s Albert Ludwigs University. In 1992–1993, he broadened his views by attending Roskilde University in Denmark for his academic adventure. Habeck’s political career began in 2009 when he was chosen to represent The Greens in the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag. He gained notoriety in the party swiftly, and from 2009 to 2012 he served as the Alliance 90/The Greens group’s chairman in Schleswig-Holstein.
Habeck’s influential career in state politics began when he was chosen as The Greens’ top candidate for the 2012 Schleswig-Holstein state election in November 2011. He was appointed as the state of Schleswig-Holstein’s Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for Energy, Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Areas in part because of his commitment to environmental and energy concerns. Between 2017 and 2018, he remained in this position within the Günther Cabinet’s center-right.
Habeck was an influential member of the Bundesrat, the federal council of Germany, where he helped to draft laws governing economic, environmental, and agricultural matters. After the 2017 state elections, his dedication to the Green Party’s principles and objectives helped it rise to the third-largest faction in the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag.
