Wolfgang Back was known to be a German science editor and television presenter. He was born on April 9, 1943, and became very famous due to the television magazine Hobbythek and the WDR computer club. He is also considered one of the co-founders of computer journalism in Germany. He attended the Wilhelm-Hofman-Gymnasium in Sankt Goarshausen after completing elementary school. When he was 14 years old, he worked as a local reporter for the Rhein-Zeitung in Koblenz till he was able to complete high school in 1963. Wolfgang Back also had studies in electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen. He took to the translation of articles in 1970. He translated the newly published Dutch trade magazine into German and then got a job at WDR. He became a contributor for the television program Science Today and in 1973, he became the moderator of Autopia. Wolfgang Back also worked with Jean Putz in 1972 and 1973 with respect to the 12-part television program called Introduction To Digital Technology. He also hosted Hobbythek from 1974 to 1981 with Putz. Wolfgang Back got involved with the emerging maker movement and new technologies such as 3D printing in addition to computer and communications technology. He participated in the opening of the makerspace of the Freie Maker Aachen/Lemiers association in Lemiers, Netherlands on June 25, 2016. Wolfgang Back received the Freie Maker Award in recognition of his life’s work. The award was given to him by the Freie Makers Aachen at the Maker Faire Berlin in 2016.

Wolfgang died on December 5, 2019. At the time of his death, he was 76 years old. He died in Cologne but the cause of his death is yet to be updated.

When he was alive, Wolfgang Back was involved in a lot of films and also received a lot of awards. Some of these awards are 2001: Member of the Wall of Fame of the 150 most important pioneers in the computer sector. Installed in the HNF Paderborn computer museum for the topic of media, 2007: Podcast Award for ComputerClub2, together with Wolfgang Rudolph, 2008: European Podcast Award: Excellence Award 2008/2009 for ComputerClub2, together with Wolfgang Rudolph and 2016: Freie Maker Award for life’s work at the Maker Faire Berlin 2016, presented by the Freie Maker Aachen/Lemiers association. The films also include 1970: Science Today, 1972–1973: Introduction to digital technology, 1973: Autopia, 1974–1981: Hobby Library, 1981: eff-eff (forerunner of the WDR Computer Club ), 1981: Inventor Exchange, among others.
