Jane Russel was born on June 21, 1921, and she was an American actress. She was born in Bemidji, Minnesota and her parents were Geraldine (née Jacobi) and Roy William Russel. She was the first of five children and her siblings are Thomas, Kenneth, Jamie, and Wallace.
Jane Russel‘s father was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army and her mother was an actress with a road troupe. The parents of Jane Russel lived in Edmonton, Alberta but later they relocated to Southern California where her father worked as an office manager.
While growing up, Jane Russel‘s mother made arrangements for her to learn how to play the piano. She was also interested in drama as well as stage productions at Van Nuys High School. Initially, she had wanted to become a designer until her father died.
She worked as a receptionist and modeled for photographers. Jane Russel studied drama and acting with Max Reinhardt’s Theatrical Workshop and with actress and acting coach Maria Ouspenskaya.
Between the 1940s and 1950s, Jane Russel was seen as one of Hollywood’s leading sex symbols and she made appearances in over twenty films. Jane Russel was known for her beauty, silhouette, presence, charisma and seriousness.
Her first film role was in Howard Hughes’ The Outlaw (1943) when she relocated to California from the Midwest. Apart from making appearances in films, Jane Russel also made time for music.
In the 1950s, she starred in many films and subsequently decided on music in the 1960s. Jane Russel married three times and adopted three children. She founded Waif in 1995, the first international adoption program. Jane Russel has her name was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Jane Russel was reported dead in her home in Santa Maria. She died on February 28, 2011, and her death was attributed to a respiratory-related illness. Her funeral came off on March 12, 2011, at Pacific Christian Church, Santa Maria. While alive, Jane Russel supported the Republican Party. At age 79, she had gone for rehab due to alcoholism.
