Bernd Fischerauer was an Austrian director, actor, novelist and screenwriter who was born on March 11, 1943. He was born to a father who was a member of the Waffen-SS and a convinced anti-Semite. He completed High school in Graz in 1961.
He also studied at the Max Reinhardt Seminar. Bernd Fischerauer successfully graduated in 1965 as a member of the Directing Class. The area of focus for Bernd Fischerauer was theater and television.
t would be recounted that in 1968, he staged the premiere of Wolfgang Bauer’s debut work Magic Afternoon. He also directed at the Vienna Volkstheater beginning in 1969. The Production of Change by Wolfgang Bauer at the Volkstheater was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 1970.
Bernd Fischerauer took that opportunity and turned it into a screenplay. He made his debut as a film director with Change in 1975. Earlier in 1971/1972, he received the Karl Skraup Prize as Best Director. He was also the director of the four-hour television production of Blood and Honor-Youth Under Hitler (1982).
He produced Love and Other Catastrophes in 1998. The film won the Bambi Award for the actors and he was nominated for the Adolf Grimme Prize. He also played the role of Bishop von Galen in Costa-Gavras’ 2002 literary film adaptation, The Deputy based on Rolf Hochhuth.
He also worked on the series titled To The Point Lena! with the likes of Lisa Fitz, Uschi Glas, Marianne Lindner and Michael Roll. Some of the works of Bernd Fischerauer linked to his homeland include The Wiesingers, The Salt Baron, Appolonia as well as Summit Storm.
He also had success on the international scene with Regina on The Steps. Bernd Fischerauer in 2009 decided to focus on topics from contemporary history between 1862 and 1949 with respect to the ten-part series titled From Empire to Republic.
The series was launched by ARD-alpha, an educational channel.
