Who Was Christof May?
Christof May was a respected German Catholic theologian and priest born on April 8, 1973. He is well known for his advocacy for a number of changes in the Catholic Church.
He was very passionate about issues regarding homosexual couples, the ordination of women, etc. One of his sermons went viral in 2020 where he spoke about changes that are needed in the Catholic church.
He held the view that homosexual couples must be admitted in the Catholic Church as well as being able to ordain women to serve in the church. In addition to that, he also advocated for divorced and remarried couples to be admitted to the sacraments.
He authored three books by himself, published in 2004, 2006 and 2010 and also co-authored additional two.
Prior to his death in 2022, May was serving as Regens of the seminary for the Diocese of Limburg where he was in charge of the training of subsequent priests.
He was also a Domkapitular in the cathedral chapter and in charge of the development of the church due to his role as Bischofsvikar.
Prior to working for the Diocese of Limburg, May served in various capacities elsewhere, including as a chaplain. He became rector Odette Bischof-Blum-Kolleg in Limburg an der Lahn.
Prior to that, he was the parish priest for St. Anna in Braunfels from September 2008 and later became dean for Wetzlar and Lahn-Dill-Eder regions. He has also served as a chaplain in St. Bonifatious, Wiesbaden and in Königstein and Kronberg.
However despite his many years of work and service in the Catholic Church in Germany, it appears he wasn’t a saint afterall. He was accused of sexually assaulting quite a number of people.
The accusations were made known to him on June 7, 2022 by his Bishop, Georg Bätzing and in two days time was found dead in a forest near Eschenau. Investigations revealed that he committed suicide a day after he was informed of the accusations.
