Francesco Gabbani, born on September 9, 1982, is an Italian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
He rose to prominence after winning the newcomers’ section of the Sanremo Music Festival with his song “Amen” in 2016. The following year, he won the festival’s main division with the popular song “Occidentali’s Karma” and represented Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest, coming sixth.
Gabbani’s musical career started in 2009, when he appeared on Mira Leon’s single “Filodoro.” His breakthrough singles “Estate” and “Maledetto amore” were published in 2011, followed by “I dischi non-si suonano” and “Clandestino” from his debut studio album, “Greitist Iz” in 2013. Although the album only reached number 59 on the Italian Albums Chart, it marked the start of Gabbani’s meteoric journey to stardom.
Gabbani signed with BMG Rights Management in 2015, paving the way for his breakthrough in the music industry. The following year, he performed “Amen” in the newcomers’ portion of the Sanremo Music Festival, where he won the competition and received the Mia Martini Critics Award. The song was released as the first single from his second studio album and went platinum in Italy.
“Eternamente ora,” Gabbani’s second studio album, was released in 2016 and peaked at number 18 on the Italian Albums Chart. “Eternamente ora” and “In equilibrio” were two more singles from the album. Gabbani also composed the soundtrack for the Italian comedy film “Poveri ma ricchi” and released the single “Foglie al gelo” in December 2016.
The year 2017 proved to be a watershed moment in Gabbani’s career. He won the “Big Artists” section of the Sanremo Music Festival with his song “Occidentali’s Karma,” becoming the first musician to win both sections in consecutive years.
It was later confirmed that he would compete in the Eurovision Song Contest with the same song. Gabbani was a favourite to win the competition, but he ended sixth with 334 points. In April 2017, he released “Magellano,” his third studio album, which debuted at number one on the Italian Albums Chart.
Gabbani released “un’altra cosa,” the first song from his fourth studio album, “Viceversa,” in 2019. He took second place in the Sanremo Music Festival 2020 with the song “Vice versa.”
The single reached number two on the Italian Singles Chart. Gabbani has been nominated for numerous honours during his career, including Best Italian Male at the MTV Italian Music honours in 2017 and Best Italian Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
