Australian singer and actress Waltraud Haas passed away on 23rd April, 2025. She recognized through her roles in regional and musical films like Der Hofrat Geiger and Im weißen Rößl.

Biography

Waltraud was born on June 9, 19,27 in Vienna to Walther Haas and Stephanie. Her mother insisted that she attend a home economics school. Her love of the arts, however, drove her to enroll in official studies at Vienna’s Conservatory of Performing Arts. She also received private acting classes with Burgtheater star Julia Janssen.

In 1946, Haas made her stage debut as Hermia in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Landestheater Linz. Later, she gave performances at prestigious theaters including the Renaissance Theater and the Vienna Bürgertheater, where she costarred with Peter Alexander in Ludwig Schmidseder’s operetta Abschiedswalzer in 1949.
She played Mariandl Mühlhuber in the 1947 blockbuster film Der Hofrat Geiger, which marked her cinematic debut.

She returned the roles in a theatrical adaptation at the Wachau Festival in 2005, with her husband Erwin Strahl performing and directing the titular role of Hofrat.
Haas became one of the most known faces in German-speaking cinema throughout the 1950s and 1960s after appearing in a number of musical comedies and operetta films. Her most famous part from this era is that of the innkeeper in Im weißen Rößl (1960), in which she stars with Peter Alexander.

She was also a children’s author, writing fairy tale books starting in 1990. In 2016, she commemorated her 70th stage anniversary with a duet named Dieses Glücksgefühl, recorded with tenor Rudi Giovannini.

Personal Life

She briefly engaged Swiss rider Hugo Koblet in 1953, but the two broke up the following year. She married fellow Austrian film star Erwin Strahl on July 28, 1966. They have a son, Marcus Strahl.
