Biography


Val Kilmer was born on 31 December 1958, in Los Angeles, California. He was born to a Swedish-born mother, Gladys Swanette, and an Irish descendant Eugene Doris Kilmer. He went to Chatsworth High School with Kevin Spacey. He was the youngest person accepted into the Juilliard School’s Drama Division, where he was a member of Group 1.


Val Kilmer made his Broadway debut in 1983 with the play The Slab Boys, a drama by John Byrne about the life of adolescent workers in a Scottish carpet industry. The cast included Kevin Bacon, Sean Penn, and Jackie Earle Haley. Kilmer portrayed Alan Downie, which was an important milestone in his early career.


That same year, Kilmer had his first significant off-stage role in the ABC Afterschool Special episode One Too Many. This educational play about the hazards of drinking and driving co-starred a teenage Michelle Pfeiffer.

This role was one of Kilmer’s first forays into television acting, discounting his earlier work in commercials. Kilmer featured in Michael Apted’s mystery film Thunderheart, released in 1992. He played Ray Levoi, an FBI agent of Sioux ancestry sent to investigate a murder on a Native American reservation.

The film, which probed topics of cultural identity and structural injustice, was praised for its emotional depth and relevancy.


Kilmer followed this up with the action comedy The Real McCoy (1993), in which he showed off his lighter side. That same year, he reunited with Tony Scott, who directed Top Gun, to play Elvis Presley in Quentin Tarantino’s True Romance. Although his involvement was limited, Kilmer’s intriguing portrayal of the King provided a distinct flavor to the film.


Kilmer starred in the 2017 film Song to Song, directed by Terrence Malick and starring Rooney Mara and Ryan Gosling. Kilmer also appears in the 2017 picture The Snowman, alongside Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson, which was directed by Tomas Alfredson.


Kilmer and his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, appeared together on screen for the first time in Paydirt in August 2020. He turned as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the sequel to Top Gun. Top Gun: Maverick (2022).
