Biography

Tulsi Gabbard is a politician and military officer from the United States who has been the 8th director of National Intelligence (DNI) since 2025. She was born on April 12, 1981.

Tulsi Gabbard started her military career in the Hawaii Army National Guard, where she served and received the Combat Medical Badge. She graduated from the Alabama Military Academy’s officer training program in 2007. She deployed to Kuwait the next year as an Army Military Police officer.

She increased in rank throughout the years, serving in Congress and joining the Hawaii Army National Guard as a major in 2015. She moved to the U.S. Army Reserve in 2020, and in 2021, she received a promotion to lieutenant colonel.

In 2012, Gabbard was chosen to serve as the representative for Hawaii’s second congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. As the first American of Samoan and Hindu descent to hold a seat in the U.S. Congress, she created history. She presented legislation about veterans’ affairs while serving on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC).

She was also a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where she opposed American military action in the Syrian civil war and took strong positions against Islamic extremism. She joined the HASC Subcommittee on Intelligence during her fourth term, where she is in charge of terrorist and military intelligence.

Gabbard’s 2020 presidential candidacy was based on populist and anti-interventionist foreign policy beliefs. She did, however, withdraw from the campaign in March 2020 and support Joe Biden instead. She previously resigned her position as vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in 2013 to back Bernie Sanders in his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Following her departure from Congress in 2021, Gabbard’s views on several topics markedly differed from those of the Democratic Party, including abortion, foreign policy, border security, and transgender rights. She quit the party formally in 2022.

Gabbard joined the Republican Party after endorsing Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Trump named Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) after winning the election, a move that drew criticism and praise. While many Republicans and veterans supported her qualifications by pointing to her time in Congress and military service, some questioned her prior stances on Syria and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Senate approved Gabbard as DNI in February 2025, making her the highest-ranking Pacific Islander American in the history of the U.S. government. Upon her appointment, she became the first millennial to serve as Director of National Intelligence and the youngest individual to ever occupy the role.
