Torsten Lieberknecht is a German former professional footballer and current football manager. He was born on 1 August 1973 ans as of April 2025, he is the head coach of 2. Bundesliga club 1. FC Kaiserslautern, the team where he began his senior playing career.
Career
Torsten Lieberknecht began his professional career at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, making his Bundesliga debut on 26 August 1992 against SG Wattenscheid 09. After the 1993–1994 season, he left Kaiserslautern to join SV Waldhof Mannheim. He played for Mannheim, 1. FSV Mainz 05 and Eintracht Braunschweig for a total of eleven seasons in the 2. Bundesliga before retiring in 2007.
Internationally, he represented Germany at the U-21 level, earning nine caps, and was part of the German squad at the 1993 FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia.
Lieberknecht began coaching shortly after retiring, starting with the younger teams of Eintracht Braunschweig, where he finished his playing career. Lieberknecht was named first-team manager in May 2008, following Benno Möhlmann’s departure, during a difficult time for the club.
At the time, Eintracht Braunschweig was at risk of missing qualification for the newly established 3. Liga, which would have meant a historic drop into the fourth tier of German football.
Braunschweig earned promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in the 2010–11 season. Just two seasons later, in 2012–13, the club secured promotion to the Bundesliga, returning to Germany’s top flight for the first time in 28 years. Over ten seasons, he compiled a record of 151 wins, 99 draws, and 120 losses before departing in 2018.
On 1 October 2018, Lieberknecht was appointed head coach of MSV Duisburg. Despite some promising moments, he struggled to maintain consistent results and was dismissed on 10 November 2020.
In June 2021, Lieberknecht took over as head coach of SV Darmstadt 98, leading the club through several competitive seasons in the 2. Bundesliga. On 22 April 2025, Torsten Lieberknecht was named head coach of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, returning to the club where his professional football journey had begun over three decades earlier.
