Biography
Robert Habeck is a German politician and writer who was born on born 2 September 1969. He has been serving as Vice Chancellor of Germany, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action in the cabinet of Chancellor Olaf Scholz and as a Member of the German Bundestag for Flensburg – Schleswig.
In 1989, Habeck completed his final secondary school exams at the Heinrich Heine School in Heikendorf, Plön.
Following his alternative civilian service in 1991, he enrolled at Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg am Breisgau to pursue a master’s degree in philosophy, German, and philology.
In 1992/93, after passing the intermediate exam, he enrolled in Denmark’s Roskilde University.
The University of Hamburg awarded Habeck a master’s degree in 1996. He earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Hamburg from 1996 to 1998, with a thesis on the portrayal of nature in literature, in 2000.
Habeck was elected on the party ticket to the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag in 2009. He was chosen as his party’s leading candidate in the November 2011 Schleswig-Holstein election. Habeck chaired the Alliance 90/The Greens group in Schleswig-Holstein from 2009 until 2012.
He served on Germany’s provisional National Commission for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste from 2014 to 2016.
To elect the German president in 2012, Habeck represented the Green Party at the Federal Convention. Along with Annalena Baerbock, he was chosen chairman of the Green Party’s national conference in Hanover on January 27, 2018.
Habeck attended the first combined cabinet meeting of the German and Japanese governments in Tokyo in March 2023, which was presided over by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Chancellor Scholz.
