Biography
Nico Schulz is a German professional footballer who plays as a left-back for Turkish club Ankaragücü. He was born on 1 April 1993 in Berlin, Germany.
In 2000, at the age of seven, Schulz joined the Hertha BSC junior academy after starting his football career with BSC Rehberge Berlin. He turned down a rumored offer from Liverpool to continue his development in Germany, even though his impressive youth exploits garnered interest from top European teams.
During the 2009–10 season, he advanced to the U19 DFB-Pokal final as part of Hertha’s junior system. However, the squad fell to 1899 Hoffenheim 1-2.
On August 14, 2010, Schulz made his professional debut for Hertha BSC against SC Pfullendorf in a DFB-Pokal game, entering as a late substitution in a 2-0 victory. He steadily gained more playing time and established himself as a mainstay in the team during the next seasons.
In a game against VfL Bochum on March 30, 2013, he scored his first goal for the team. Schulz agreed to a four-year contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach on August 18, 2015.
Schulz moved to 1899 Hoffenheim in 2017, where he thrived under Julian Nagelsmann as manager. He was recognized by the national team for his efforts, which also cemented his status as a versatile full-back who can contribute both offensively and defensively.
Schulz joined Borussia Dortmund on May 22, 2019, along with Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt. Nevertheless, he had little playing time and injuries throughout his tenure with the club. His single appearance under coach Edin Terzić came in a friendly match for Borussia Dortmund II in September 2022, and he did not play in any senior competitive games. A year before it was set to expire, on July 20, 2023, his contract with the club was canceled.
On August 29, 2018, Schulz was called up to the national team for the first time for friendly and UEFA Nations League games. On September 9, 2018, he made his debut against Peru, scoring the game-winning goal in the 85th minute. Schulz elected to play for Germany and gained 12 international caps, including two goals, despite being eligible to play for Italy through his father, who is from the island of Ischia.
