Biography
Mark Carney is a politician and an economist from Canada who has been the leader of the Liberal Party since 2025 and has served as the 24th prime minister of Canada.
He was born on March 16, 1965 in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He attended Harvard University on a partial scholarship and financial help after graduating from St. Francis Xavier High School in the class of 1983. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics with honors in 1987 while residing in Winthrop House.
After that, he pursued postgraduate work at the University of Oxford at St. Peter’s College and Nuffield College, where he graduated in 1993 with a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and in 1995 with a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in economics.
Carney began his career at Goldman Sachs, where he worked for 13 years in a variety of senior roles and had a thorough understanding of international markets. He fast gained notoriety after joining the Bank of Canada in 2003 as deputy governor. He was named senior associate deputy minister in the Department of Finance a year later.
Carney was named the Bank of Canada’s eighth governor in 2008, and he used his strong monetary policy and regulatory leadership to guide the nation through the global financial crisis.
Carney became the first non-Briton to serve as the 120th governor of the Bank of England in 2013, making history in the process. He led the bank’s reaction to the early phases of the COVID-19 outbreak and the uncertainties surrounding Brexit during his time there.
In January 2025, after Trudeau announced his resignation, Carney announced his intention to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party. He won a landslide win in the March 2025 leadership election despite his candidacy being largely expected and receiving widespread support within the party.
