Biography
Louise Dumont was born in Cologne on February 22, 1862. When Dumont tried out for the Residenz stage in Berlin in 1882, her career as a stage actress got underway. It was then that she got her first part and became an artist by taking on her mother’s maiden name, Dumont. Her ability soon became known, and in 1888 she was invited to perform at Stuttgart’s Royal Court Theatre, where she befriended Queen Charlotte of Wurttemberg.
After joining Berlin’s Deutsches Theatre in 1898, Dumont’s career took a new turn and she saw her biggest achievements there.
In German theater history, nevertheless, Dumont’s partnership with Gustav Lindemann would have a lasting impact. The couple made a huge contribution to the cultural environment of Düsseldorf when they founded the Schauspielhaus in 1904. When the theater opened to much acclaim on October 28, 1905, Dumont and Lindemann had overcome early obstacles and disappointments, including opposition from local court intrigues.
The Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf flourished under Dumont’s leadership, producing a new wave of performers who would go on to influence German theater for many years to come. Aspired performers were trained in the theater’s academy, including notables like Gustaf Gründgens and Luise Rainer.
