Biography
Lena Oberdorf is a professional footballer from Germany who plays as a midfielder for Frauen-Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and the German national team.
She was born on 19 December 2001 in Gevelsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. In her childhood, Oberdorf played on and captained boys’ football teams. Oberdorf started football at TuS Ennepetal.
As a D youngster, she moved to TSG Sprockhövel, where she played on boys’ teams till 2018. As captain of TSG Sprockhövel, she was the only female player in the German juvenile league.
In October 2014, at the age of 12, Oberdorf made her debut for Germany’s U-15 team. Two days later, she scored her first goal in an 8–0 triumph over Scotland. In Jordan, she competed for Germany in the U-17 World Cup in 2016.
In November 2017, Oberdorf signed with Frauen-Bundesliga club SGS Essen, officially joining them in the summer of 2018. She made an immediate impact, scoring twice in her debut match on 9 September 2018 in the DFB-Pokal against SV Henstedt-Ulzburg. Just days later, she netted two more goals in her league debut against MSV Duisburg.
Oberdorf moved to VfL Wolfsburg prior to the 2020–21 season. In August 2020, she made her debut as a substitute in Wolfsburg’s 3-1 loss to Lyon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final.
Oberdorf contributed to Wolfsburg’s successful era by helping the team win the DFB-Pokal in her first full season. She played a significant role in both their run to the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals and their 2021–22 Bundesliga title-winning season.
She placed fourth in the 2022 Ballon d’Or Féminin and third in the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year rankings as a result of her achievements.
Oberdorf was a key player in Wolfsburg’s march to the Champions League final in the 2022–2023 season, only missing out to Barcelona 3–2. She was signed by Bayern Munich on February 15, 2024. According to reports, the agreement made her the most expensive German woman football player ever.
