Joseph Baumgartner was a German politician who lived between November 16, 1904, and January 21, 1964. He is noted as a politician who campaigned for a free, democratic and independent Bavaria.
He had his education at a Latin school at the Scheyern Benedictine Monastery. Joseph Baumgartner also attended the Humanistic High School in Freising. It must be noted that he studied philosophy, history and economics when he was in Berlin between 1925 and 1929. He earned a degree in Economics and a Dr. rer.pole.
He was a volunteer at the Upper Bavarian Christian Farmers Association in 1929 and also served as deputy general secretary of the Bavarian Farmers’ Associate from 1929 to 1933.
Joseph Baumgartner was also a member of the Bavarian People’s Party and later in 1933, he was a worker at Allianz Insurance Company. Beginning from January 1945, he was a personal officer at the Office for Food and Agriculture in Munich.
He is considered a co-founder of the Christian Social Union and served as the Bavarian Minister of Agriculture beginning from October 5, 1945.
Joseph Baumgartner joined the newly founded Bavarian Party after parting ways with the Christian Social Union in 1948. He started lecturing at the Agricultural University in January 1948.
Joseph Baumgartner got elected to the German Bundestag via the Bavarian Party’s state list but resigned on January 1, 1951.
He was the Chairman of the Bavarian Party and also served as the chairman of the electoral alliance party, Federalist Union in 1957.
An investigative committee was set up in 1955 to investigate his possible involvement in the issue of the Casino officer. This was due to rumors that bribes had been paid in order to get a license.
