Biography
Joschka Fischer is a German former politician of the Alliance 90/The Greens party. He was born on 12 April 1948. In 1965, Fischer left high school to begin an apprenticeship as a photographer, which he quit in 1966.
Fischer never went to college or university since he never obtained a school-leaving certificate. Due to his bad vision, he failed his physical inspection and did not participate in either the mandatory military service or the optional civilian service for conscientious objectors.
He started participating in the German student movement and the left-wing movement (the so-called Spontis) in 1967. He initially did this in Stuttgart and then in Frankfurt am Main after 1968. Fischer took several low-paying jobs to supplement his regular income, including a job at a Frankfurt left-wing bookstore.
He started going to university events during this time, such as talks given by Oskar Negt, Jürgen Habermas, and Theodor W. Adorno, who were left-wing revolutionary students.
He joined the militant organization Revolutionärer Kampf (Revolutionary Struggle) after studying the writings of Marx, Mao, and Hegel.
Fischer was a member of the Green party in the Bundestag from 1983 to 1985. “If I may say so, Fischer joined the first governing Red-Green coalition between the Greens and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1985, serving as the Environment Minister in the Hesse Landtag.
Before becoming co-chairman of the Greens’ parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Fischer served as Hessen’s environment minister once again from 1991 to 1994.
Gerhard Schröder’s Social Democratic Party of Germany overthrew Helmut Kohl’s Christian Democratic Union administration in September 1998.
Fischer was the German government’s representative at the funerals of former UK Foreign Secretary Robin Cook on August 12, 2005, in Edinburgh; Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh on September 19, 2003, in Stockholm; and Pope John Paul II on April 8, 2005, in Rome.
