In his active years as a swimmer, Jochen Balke is known to have won the European championship title in 1938. Prior to that, he participated in the 1936 German Championships and represented Westfalen Dortmund. He won the 200-meter breaststroke title.
Even though Jochen Balke managed to qualify for the 1936 Olympic Games, he only managed to place sixth after reaching the final. It must be noted that with all the experiences of Jochen Balke with respect to swimming, his most successful year was 1938.

Jochen Balke was also the winner at the 1938 European Swimming Championships in London with a time of 2:45.8 minutes. It must be noted that again, he experienced success at the German championship in 1940 and 1941.
In both years, he won in the 200-meter breaststroke. He is said to have also won another title in the short course in 1940.
