Biography
Jack Nicholson is an American retired actor and filmmaker who is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of the 20th century, often playing rebels fighting against the social structure.
Jack was born April 22, 1937 in Neptune City, New Jersey. The Class of 1954 elected Nick, as his high school pals called him, “Class Clown” at the nearby Manasquan High School.
He spent a whole school year in detention every day. The school honors him with a theater and a drama prize. Together with his aunt Lorraine, Nicholson went to his 50th high school reunion in 2004.
In 1950, Nicholson traveled to California for the first time at the age of 13 to see his sister. At the MGM cartoon studio, he accepted a position as an office worker for animation directors Joseph Barbera and William Hanna. He turned down their offer of an entry-level animator position, saying he wanted to be an actor instead.
Nicholson’s first significant acting break came in 1969 when a part in Fonda and Hopper’s Easy Rider became available. His role as George Hanson, an alcoholic lawyer, earned him his first Oscar nomination.
Together with Karen Black, Nicholson played the part that would define his identity in the 1970 film Five Easy Pieces. For their performances, Nicholson and Black received Academy Award nominations.Â
Black portrayed his waitress girlfriend, while Nicholson portrayed oil rig worker Bobby Dupea.
He played an immigration enforcement officer in Tony Richardson’s 1982 film The Border. Warren Oates, who portrayed a dishonest border official, costarred. In contrast to his previous parts, Richardson wanted Nicholson to play his part with less expression.
Nicholson was the first actor to win the Stanislavsky Award for “conquering the heights of acting and faithfulness” at the 23rd Moscow International Film Festival in 2001.
In the same year, Nicholson played retired police investigator Jerry Black in the mystery drama The Pledge, in which he makes a commitment to track out a little girl’s killer.
Nicholson made an uncommon appearance on Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special, SNL 50, on February 16, 2025. Adam Sandler, who gave an homage to the performance, was introduced by him.
