Biography
Gregor Gysi, born on January 16, 1948, in Berlin-Lichtenberg, East Germany, is a German attorney, former president of the Party of the European Left, and a prominent politician of The Left (Die Linke) political party.
In 1967, Gysi joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). He became a licensed lawyer in 1971 and was well-known for his defense of East German dissidents like Rudolf Bahro, Robert Havemann, Ulrike Poppe, and Bärbel Bohley. He was a leading reformist in the late 1980s, motivated by Mikhail Gorbachev’s glasnost and perestroika policies, and he played a significant role in the legal opposition to restrictive state policies.
Gysi took part in important democratic activities during the political upheaval of 1989, such as the November 4 large-scale protest at Alexanderplatz. He was a member of a legal team that fought against governmental limitations and promoted free elections.
He was elected head of the SED in December 1989 following the resignation of Egon Krenz. He spearheaded attempts to transform the party into a democratic socialist organization and openly admitted the party’s shortcomings.
Gysi accused the German government of blackmailing Greece and backed Greece during the Greek government’s financial crisis. In addition, he has advocated the creation of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly and argued for democratic change inside the organization.
He claimed to have received payments for about 90 public engagements in 2019, in addition to revenue from his book publishing and law business. He used to smoke a lot but stopped after he survived a heart attack in 2004.
