Biography
Father Joseph Murphy, who served as the headmaster of a private boys’ school, was a devout Roman Catholic. However, a life-changing encounter with healing prayer changed his course.
Murphy left the Jesuits in his twenties and began a new chapter of his life as a result of a life-changing experience. He made the decision to relocate to the country, choosing to live in New York City. He had by this time pursued a career as a pharmacist and obtained a degree in chemistry.
Joseph Murphy discovered the Church of the Healing Christ, a branch of the Church of Divine Science, in New York. A well-known minister named Emmet Fox was in charge of the church. This spiritual group had a significant impact on Murphy’s life and led him down a path of enlightenment and healing.
Joseph Murphy moved to Los Angeles in the middle of the 1940s, where he had the chance to meet Ernest Holmes, the man who founded Religious Science. In 1946, Murphy received his ordination into Religious Science under Holmes’ direction. His knowledge and impact in the area of spiritual healing continued to grow when he started teaching at the Institute of Religious Science.
Erwin Gregg, the head of the Divine Science Association, introduced Murphy to a new path on his spiritual path. His reordination into Divine Science followed this encounter. Joseph Murphy was appointed as the minister of the Los Angeles Divine Science Church in 1949. In this position, he would excel and leave a lasting impression.
Under Joseph Murphy’s leadership, the Los Angeles Divine Science Church blossomed into one of the largest New Thought congregations in the United States. His teachings and guidance inspired countless individuals to explore their inner potential and discover the power of their thoughts and beliefs.

Over the next decade, Murphy’s life continued to evolve. He married and furthered his academic pursuits, earning a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Southern California. It was during this time that he began writing, sharing his insights and teachings with a broader audience.
