Biography
Daniela Marie Luise Klette was born in Karlsruhe, West Germany, on November 5, 1958. The general public knows very little about her early life before her engagement in left-wing activities.
Klette started being involved in left-wing organizations in 1975. They took part in several political campaigns, including the anti-NATO movement and the fight against the construction of Runway 18 West at Frankfurt Airport.
She is accused of belonging to the third generation of the Red Army Faction (RAF), a militant left-wing organization active in West Germany from the 1970s to the 1990s. Klette is linked to several high-profile incidents, including the 1991 sniper attempt on the US embassy in Bonn and the 1993 bombing of the Weiterstadt jail in Hesse.
Klette went underground in the nineties. She and accomplices Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub were suspected in 1999 of taking 1 million Deutsche Marks during an armed robbery in Duisburg.
The three were later referred to by the media as “RAF pensioners” and were still at large for many years. Between 1999 and 2016, they were linked to several robberies, including those in Wolfsburg (2015), Cremlingen (2016), Stuhr (2015), and Bochum-Wattenscheid (2006).
Since 2015, Klette, Garweg, and Staub have been under investigation by the German Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt) for multiple aggravated robberies and attempted murders. A €150,000 reward was offered in a public appeal for their capture.
Despite multiple near-captures, including a mistaken arrest of three suspects in the Netherlands in 2016, Klette remained elusive until late 2023. Police received a tip-off in November 2023 that ultimately led to her arrest.
In a coordinated operation, the Berlin Police and the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA Niedersachsen) apprehended Klette in Berlin on February 26, 2024. Accused of participating in six violent robberies worth millions of euros and at least one instance of attempted murder, she was arrested without opposition.
Klette had been residing in a fifth-floor flat at Sebastianstraße 73 in Berlin under the identity “Claudia Ivone.” She was an Italian national and had an internet profile, including a Facebook page.
