Biography
Cory Booker is a well-known American politician who has been the senior US Senator representing New Jersey since 2013. He was born on April 27, 1969, in Washington, D.C., and raised in Harrington Park, New Jersey. Booker, a Democrat, became the first African-American senator from New Jersey.
In 1991, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University, and in 1992, he obtained a Master’s degree. His academic journey continued overseas at Queen’s College, Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar before completing his education at Yale Law School.
In 1998, he gained an unexpected victory for a position on the Newark Municipal Council, representing the Central Ward. He gained national notoriety for his brave action, which included a 10-day hunger strike and time spent living in a tent to expose terrible living conditions and the need for urban regeneration.
In 2002, he ran a close race against longtime Newark Mayor Sharpe James but lost. Undeterred, he ran for mayor again in 2006 and won, defeating Deputy Mayor Ronald Rice. During his first tenure, Booker drastically decreased the city’s budget deficit from $180 million to $73 million while doubling the number of affordable housing under construction. His leadership helped him win reelection in 2010.
Booker made his national political debut by winning New Jersey’s 2013 special Senate election following the death of Senator Frank Lautenberg. He was reelected in 2014 and 2020 and has emerged as a progressive figure in the Senate.
He sought the Democratic candidacy in the 2020 US presidential election, bringing ideas of unity and justice on the campaign trail until withdrawing on January 13, 2020.
In 2017, he made history as the first serving senator to testify against another senator, opposing Jeff Sessions’ confirmation for Attorney General. Most recently, Booker made the longest speech in US Senate history, lasting 25 hours and five minutes from March 31 to April 1, 2025, in protest of policies implemented under Donald Trump’s second term.
