Who Is Chef Ali Gungormus?
Ali Haydar Güngörmüş, born on October 15, 1976, in Pageou, Tunceli Province, Turkey, is a renowned German star and television chef.
He grew up in Pageou, a now-defunct village in the eastern Anatolian highlands, as the middle child of seven siblings on his family’s tiny farm. His family relocated to Germany in 1986 to be with his father, who worked as a welder in Munich.
Despite his parents’ and family’s opposition, Güngörmüş pursued his passion for cooking and trained to become a chef. He explains his road to becoming a renowned chef in his book “60 Years – How Germany Became a Homeland” by Green Party leader zcan Mutlu.
Güngörmüş’s culinary career took off in 2000, when he was named head chef at Munich’s famous Lenbach restaurant. He polished his abilities further at the 1-star Glockenbach restaurant under the tutelage of Karl Ederer. Ederer became his sponsor and assisted him in obtaining roles at Wertheim’s renowned 2-star restaurants Tantris and Schweizer Stuben.
Güngörmüş founded his first restaurant, Le Canard Nouveau, in Hamburg-Othmarschen in 2005. It immediately acquired popularity, and it was granted a Michelin star in November 2006. Güngörmüş relinquished the job of head chef to Florian Pöschl in 2016, but remained a co-owner of Le Canard Nouveau.
In addition to Le Canard Nouveau, Güngörmüş opened Pageou, a restaurant in Munich, in 2014. His hometown in eastern Anatolia inspired the name. He opened Pera Meze, a Turkish restaurant in Munich’s Gärtnerplatzviertel, in 2022.
Güngörmüş’s culinary talent has also reached the television screen. He was a juror on the ZDF show “The Kitchen Battle” and presented it for four weeks in 2012 and 2013.
He has also served as a judge on the cooking show “Topfgeldjäger” and has appeared as a guest on several others, including “Grill den Henssler” and “Grill den Profi.”
Güngörmüş coached actor Birol Ünel for his role as an eccentric chef in Fatih Akn’s comedy film “Soul Kitchen” outside of the culinary sector. In 2021, he also appeared in the television film “Servus, mother-in-law!” and has made guest appearances on shows such as “Wir in Bayern.”
Numerous prizes and distinctions have been bestowed to Güngörmüş for his ability and contributions to the culinary business. His restaurant, Le Canard Nouveau, was awarded a Michelin star in 2006. In 2006, he was also named one of the 100 Minds of Future by the Germany – Land of Ideas project. In 2018, his Munich restaurant Pageou scored 17 Gault-Millau points.
