Adolf Brudes von Breslau was a well-known Formula One driver from Germany who enjoyed a long and successful career in motorsports.
Born on October 15, 1899, in Kotulin, near Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland), Brudes started racing motorcycles in 1919. In the 1920s, he worked as a master mechanic and works rider for motorcycle maker Victoria. In 1925, he established a land speed record of 102½mph.
Brudes switched to car racing in 1928 and rapidly created a reputation for himself in hill climbs, especially in Poland, where he won multiple races.
Along with his racing career, Brudes opened a BMW and Auto Union dealership in Breslau and increased his automobile collection to include a Bugatti Type 35B and an MG C-type.
Brudes lost everything during WWII and was forced to relocate to Sedlitz, a town in eastern Germany. After the war, he moved to Berlin and found employment as a mechanic at a BMW dealership. During this time, he restarted his racing career by driving for American officer Alexander Orley.
Brudes raced in his only World Championship Grand Prix in 1952 but had to retire owing to engine troubles. He also competed for Borgward in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Mille Miglia, finishing third and fourth respectively.
Brudes continued racing until 1968 when he made his final competitive appearance at the Taunus Hillclimb. Adolf Brudes von Breslau died on November 5, 1986, leaving behind a spectacular racing legacy of nearly five decades.
